Deputies arrived just before 11:00 p.m. and found Pitts’s body in the room.
The cause of Pitts’s death was determined to be sharp and blunt force injuries, along with possible strangulation, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner.
Prosecutors claim she was killed by a broken bottle or shards of glass.
Gamboa reportedly had self-inflicted injuries and told authorities he was feeling suicidal, according to the VCSO. After being taken into custody, Gamboa was treated at a hospital and released on January 10.
He was arrested for murder shortly after his release. On January 14, Gamboa was also charged with using a deadly weapon and committing a crime with great bodily injury and violence.
Gamboa is being held in jail without bail, and his arraignment is set for February 10 in Ventura County Superior Court.
The motive behind the murder is still under investigation. Authorities have stated that this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
