Family and friends are mourning the loss of Earnest Christion Jr., an Alabama husband, father, and Army veteran who was tragically killed on New Year’s Eve.
According to the Birmingham Police Department, Christion, 68, was stabbed at a home in Birmingham on Tuesday, December 31. The police are investigating the case as a homicide but have limited information and no suspects in custody at this time.
Christion, affectionately known as Rickey, is being remembered by his family for his sense of humor and caring nature. In a statement shared with AL.com, his wife Wanda Sawyer-Christion, his son Ernest P. Christion III, and his daughter-in-law Jessica Christion described him as a “beacon of joy and love.”
“Rickey was more than just a veteran; he brought laughter and positivity to everyone around him,” the family said. “Whether it was through a joke, a lighthearted comment, or his unwavering optimism, he had a unique way of making people feel happy, even during tough times.”
They also praised his devotion to his family, calling him a loving husband and dedicated father. “Rickey made sure Wanda always felt cherished and stood by her side throughout their journey together,” they said. “He was deeply committed to his children, always offering them love, advice, and encouragement.”
“His love for his family was unconditional, and he took immense pride in being a devoted father,” the statement concluded.
