A Texas man has been identified as the suspect behind a deadly New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans that left at least 15 people dead. The FBI is treating the incident as an act of terrorism.
After crashing the truck, Jabbar exited the vehicle and fired at police officers. Law enforcement returned fire, killing Jabbar at the scene. Two officers were injured but are in stable condition.
Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran, served on active duty from the mid-2000s to 2015, including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2009. He later served in the Army Reserves until 2020 and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. Records show that Jabbar had a history of minor offenses, including misdemeanor theft and driving with an invalid license.
During the investigation, an ISIS flag was found in Jabbar’s vehicle, along with weapons and a potential improvised explosive device (IED). Additional devices were discovered in the French Quarter, and bomb technicians are working to ensure they are safely rendered harmless. Authorities believe Jabbar may not have acted alone and are asking for the public’s help in gathering information.
Officials revealed that Jabbar recorded videos before the attack, discussing ISIS and personal struggles, including his recent divorce. The FBI has set up a digital tip line at www.fbi.gov/bourbonstreetattack and is urging anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI. Investigations are ongoing as authorities seek to uncover any affiliations Jabbar may have had with terrorist organizations.
