Police responded to the scene where they found Richards with several gunshot wounds. Despite attempts to save him, Richards was pronounced dead at the scene, and his death was ruled a homicide by the coroner.
King claimed he acted in self-defense, citing that he felt threatened by Richards’ aggressive tone during an argument. The details leading up to the shooting were that King was fixing the power in his garage to heat up food when Richards entered, visibly upset and threatening.
The argument escalated, and King retrieved a firearm from upstairs after Richards began making threatening remarks and charged at him. During the altercation, King shot Richards multiple times.
After the incident, King admitted to changing his initial story to 911 about fighting over the gun, later saying he felt compelled to act in self-defense. He also waited 10 to 20 minutes after the shooting to call 911, during which time he showered and removed the gun from the scene.
King is currently being held without bond in the Allen County Jail. The exact nature of King’s relationship with Richards and further details about their altercation are still under investigation.
