Authorities were worried she might hurt her unborn baby or herself.
“We have a small child who was killed by his mother, and we need to put her in jail because she is now pregnant,” said Grote Levett, an investigator for the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, to local ABC station WSB before Gloria Wright was arrested this weekend.
On Saturday, the sheriff’s office announced that Wright was arrested in Rochester, New York, by the U.S. Marshals. She is facing charges of first-degree murder and cruelty to children for the death of her son on January 8, 2025.
“We want to arrest her to keep her and her unborn child safe,” Levett said on Saturday.
Wright is accused of fleeing to New York after killing her son by hitting him on the head with something heavy. A call with the medical examiner who did the autopsy showed that the child’s skull fractures were not from an accident, like a fall, the arrest warrant said, according to WSB.
Details about why the child died or why Wright was in New York have not been shared. Wright reportedly talked to an investigator about her son’s death on January 8 but was not arrested that day.
“On January 8, 2025, the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about someone not breathing,” officials said in a press release on January 15. “When officers arrived, they found it was a 1-year-old child. Even though Emergency Medical Services tried to save the child, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.”
Police described Wright as having a tattoo on the side of her face. She used to live in Newton County and Henry County in Georgia, besides Rockdale.
A $5,000 reward was offered for information to help find her, and the public was asked to help locate Wright.
“The fugitive Gloria Wright has been found and arrested,” Rockdale police said on Saturday. “The U.S. Marshals helped make this arrest possible. We thank the public for their support and help during this investigation.”
