A devastating act of violence shattered a refugee family’s life in West Valley City, Utah, leaving a mother, three of her children, and their father dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

A Grim Discovery
The tragedy unfolded earlier this month when a family member entered the garage of the family’s home on Oxford Way and discovered 17-year-old Sha Reh with a gunshot wound.
They immediately called police. Upon arrival, officers found the lifeless bodies of five other family members inside the home.
The victims were identified as 38-year-old Bu Meh, her daughters Kristina Ree, 8, and Nyay Meh, 2, and her son Boe Reh, 11. Police believe the husband and father, 42-year-old Dae Reh, carried out the killings before taking his own life.
According to authorities, the bodies of Bu and her daughters were found upstairs, while Dae and Boe were discovered downstairs.
A Sole Survivor’s Struggle
The lone survivor, Sha Reh, is now in recovery. Extended family members started a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised over $60,000 to support his medical expenses and long-term care.
“Sha Reh is the lone survivor in his immediate family after a tragic sense of violence,” relatives shared in a statement. “He has a long and complex road to recovery.” They later provided an update, saying that Sha has shown signs of improvement but still faces a “very long road” to healing.
A Family’s Journey of Resilience
The tragedy is made even more heartbreaking by the family’s history of survival and resilience. Over a decade ago, Bu Meh fled Myanmar with her husband and children, escaping a violent campaign of ethnic cleansing targeting their people.
Arriving in the United States with little more than the clothes on their backs, the family sought refuge and safety, only for this unthinkable act to occur.
