Police arrested 68-year-old Rodney Beasley in connection with the incident.
Cavanaugh’s family claims he was trying to protect a dog from being abused by a man. In a GoFundMe page created to help cover funeral expenses, his family alleged that Bobby was attacked with a pipe when he stepped in to save the dog. Neighbors also described Bobby as an “animal lover” who was trying to rescue the dog when the attack happened.
Police have not confirmed the details of the attack and said they are still investigating the claims that Cavanaugh was trying to save a dog.
“Bobby had a heart of gold and always helped the community without asking for anything in return,” his family wrote on the fundraiser. They added that he was passionate about helping animals and giving back whenever possible.
As of Tuesday, the GoFundMe campaign had raised over $28,000 to help with burial costs.
Beasley has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, police confirmed. Information about his plea or attorney was not available at the time.
