Bates, now 45, pushed Cynthia, causing her to fall backward and hit her head on the edge of a couch.
The day before, Cynthia had told Bates she wanted a divorce.
Bates managed to evade arrest for 18 months after the incident.
Initially, a judge reduced the murder charge to battery, sparking outrage from Cynthia’s family.
They launched a petition to demand the judge’s removal, which gained over 11,600 signatures.
Later, a grand jury reinstated the murder charge, and the judge stepped away from the case after it was revealed he had connections to Bates’ family. Bates eventually went on the run in 2022, delaying justice further.
This week, Bates was found guilty of murder, aggravated assault, and child cruelty. His life sentence includes the possibility of parole.
At the time of the incident, Cynthia’s children, who were just 4 and 7 years old, witnessed their mother’s death and ran to a neighbor’s house for help.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Cynthia’s sister, Sandy Dement, said in 2017, “Her kids are lost without her. Her family is lost without her. We don’t get to talk to her anymore.”
