The video shows the officer pulling Arrington over and then asking him to get out of the car for safety reasons, because Arrington had informed the officer he was carrying a gun. In Florida, it’s legal to carry a concealed weapon with a permit or even without a permit, as long as you meet the requirements to get one.
As Officer Cardwell tried to remove the gun from Arrington’s holster, her finger ended up inside the trigger guard, accidentally causing the gun to fire. The video shows officers rushing Arrington to the side of the road and calling for help.
Arrington was treated for the gunshot wound and released from the hospital in stable condition. An internal investigation by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office found Officer Cardwell made a mistake and is now facing termination.
Arrington has spoken out about the incident, saying it has affected his ability to do his job because of the leg injury.
