Inside the burning house, they found the body of 54-year-old Ana Paula Ribeiro de Souza. Her dog also died in the fire.
Police believe that Genivaldo Gomes Moreira, Ms. de Souza’s boyfriend, killed her and then set the house on fire.
Mr. Gomes Moreira ran away in a gold car. He was caught two days later in another county.
He hasn’t been moved back to the county where the crime happened yet, but he will be charged with murder, arson (setting the fire), and animal cruelty.
Ms. de Souza had four children and three grandchildren. Her family started an online fundraiser to help with expenses.
The fundraiser says that Ms. de Souza was always smiling, had kind words for everyone, and was always willing to help. It says she was a loving and devoted family member and friend.
The fundraiser had raised over $10,000 by January 21st, the day of her funeral.
Her daughter said that her mother didn’t deserve this and that her life was focused on church and her family.
