T.D. had visited his parents on Thursday, January 9, and hugged his mom while kissing his dad on the head.
“The next time I saw them was Friday afternoon after they’d been murdered,” he told NBC News.
On January 10, Paula and Anthony were allegedly killed alongside their neighbor, Enrique Reyes, 64.
The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office (PSCO) said the suspect, 55-year-old David Lever, is now in custody.
How It Happened
Police received a call at 2:17 p.m. about the deaths. Another call came 30 minutes later about a home invasion and gunshots at a different house, which Lever was also linked to.
According to a search warrant, Paula had called her son, who lives next door, to tell him that Lever was at their house.
When T.D. went over, he found his parents fatally injured. He then confronted Lever, ordering him to raise his hands while keeping his hand on his holstered gun.
T.D. did not draw his weapon and instead called 911 for help.
“He stayed calm and begged the dispatcher to send help quickly,” said T.D.’s wife, Dana Gribble. Lever was arrested when officers arrived.
Suspect Charged
David Lever was charged with three counts of murder and appeared in court on January 13. His next court date is set for January 29.
The investigation revealed more details about the events that day. Enrique Reyes, the third victim, was last seen at a local grocery store before heading home.
Lever allegedly left his own property, fired gunshots at a gas station, and later committed the murders.
T.D. and his wife have not disclosed any possible connection between Lever and the victims. Authorities continue to investigate the case, which spans multiple crime scenes.
