The court heard that one member of the group, Bradley Harris, became upset after discovering she was transgender following a brief relationship.
Prosecutor Deanna Heer KC explained that the group set a trap, pretending to invite the woman to a roller-skating event.
Instead, they ambushed her at a car park, where she was punched, kicked, and stabbed multiple times.
On February 10, 2024, the woman left her home, believing she was meeting friends for roller-skating. When she arrived, she was attacked by Summer Betts-Ramsey, 20; Bradley Harris, 18; Camron Osei, 18; Shiloh Hindes, 18; and a 17-year-old boy. All were dressed in dark clothing with masks and hoods.
The attack began immediately upon her arrival, leaving her no time to react or defend herself. Betts-Ramsey stabbed her at least 14 times, while the others kicked and punched her for about 45 seconds before fleeing.
Members of the public found her and called for help. She was taken to the hospital with severe stab wounds and a weak pulse.
The attackers later bragged about the assault on social media, even sharing footage. Betts-Ramsey dismissed the crime, responding to criticism with, “IT deserved it.”
The woman, who now carries visible scars from the attack, shared her struggles in a victim impact statement.
She expressed fear of leaving her house, difficulty trusting others, and ongoing panic attacks. She also worries her injuries may prevent her from continuing her career as a model.
Betts-Ramsey, Harris, Osei, Hindes, and the 17-year-old boy all pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent. Betts-Ramsey also admitted to possessing a knife, while a 17-year-old girl involved in the attack admitted to robbing the woman and possessing drugs.
The court also heard that Harris had previously threatened the woman with a knife after learning she was transgender.
The sentencing hearing continues.
