Jarvis Butts, 42, from Detroit, is facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder, second-degree criminal sexual conduct, and child sexually abusive activity.

On Thursday, Judge Aliyah Sabree ruled there was enough evidence for Butts to stand trial in the 3rd Circuit Court.
Judge’s Strong Words
During the hearing, Judge Sabree called Butts “the monster in this whole picture” and highlighted how Na’Ziyah was let down by the adults around her.
“She deserved love from her parents and everyone in her life,” Sabree said.
“She was ignored, neglected, and you took complete advantage of that. She wanted someone to love her, and she will never know what that feels like.”
Sabree urged the community to see this case as a call to better protect children, particularly Black girls, from harm.
Evidence Presented
Prosecutors presented several pieces of evidence, including:
- Testimony from Butts’ business partner.
- Cell phone tower data tracking Butts’ movements.
- Witness accounts placing Butts with Na’Ziyah on the evening she disappeared.
- Na’Ziyah’s belongings found in areas linked to Butts after her disappearance.
The defense argued that the evidence was circumstantial and failed to directly link Butts to Na’Ziyah’s presumed death. However, Judge Sabree ruled that a jury should decide the case.
Family Reaction
Na’Ziyah’s cousin, Roxy, expressed gratitude for the judge’s decision, saying,
“She held him accountable. She pointed out significant things, even his body language during the hearing. My family really appreciates her for that.”
Witness Testimony
More than 20 witnesses, including experts, law enforcement officials, and family members, testified over four days.
Na’Ziyah’s grandmother and aunt testified, with her aunt, Shannon Harris, stating she had never suspected anything beyond a normal uncle-niece relationship between Butts and Na’Ziyah.
Additional Charges
Butts is also facing charges of sexual abuse involving two other girls in separate cases, further painting a troubling picture of his alleged actions.
The case will now proceed to trial, where a jury will determine Butts’ fate.
