Court documents reported by KTSM, a local NBC affiliate, detail that a family gathering escalated into violence when Morales allegedly stabbed his stepfather, Angel Martin Herrera, 40, in the neck following a verbal altercation.
Witnesses at the event, which involved heavy drinking, observed Morales becoming aggressive, choking, and hitting another person. Herrera confronted Morales, leading to a verbal dispute.
Initially called to the scene around 3:30 a.m. for the argument, police left after determining no one was injured. However, they returned half an hour later when the situation escalated to a reported stabbing.
Upon their return, Morales’ mother initially tried to claim responsibility for the stabbing, but witnesses at the scene identified Morales as the assailant. She later confessed to not being the perpetrator.
Herrera was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. Morales, after his arrest, reiterated his confession to the police and attempted to justify his actions by claiming Herrera had pushed his mother. However, witnesses did not corroborate seeing Herrera harm anyone.
Morales also mentioned that his mother attempted to cover for him, but he insisted on telling the truth.
Charged with murder and assault of a family member, Morales is currently held on a $700,000 bond at the El Paso County Detention Facility, with his next court appearance scheduled for January 17.
