David Lever, a 55-year-old man from Greenville, North Carolina, has been arrested on murder charges after police discovered three people shot to death in separate locations over the weekend.
The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as 80-year-old Anthony Gribble and his 76-year-old wife Paula, found at their home on Peace Ridge Court, and 64-year-old Enrique Reyes, found at his residence on Forest Acres Drive. Following an investigation that covered four different crime scenes spread over 4.5 miles, Lever was detained at one of the scenes on Friday. The Sheriff’s Office noted that the incidents appear to be related and the investigation is ongoing.
At a press conference, Sheriff Paula Dance mentioned that Lever had multiple weapons in his home and van. She credited the son of the elderly couple for preventing further violence by holding Lever at gunpoint until deputies arrived.
It is not yet clear how Lever was connected to Reyes, an East Carolina University professor. However, the Gribble couple had previously used Lever as their realtor when purchasing their home in 2014.
During his first court appearance on Monday, District Court Judge Daniel Entzminger ordered that Lever be held without bond at the Pitt County Detention Center. As Lever was escorted back to his cell, he insulted the judge.
Lever is due back in court on January 29, with additional charges pending.
