Lizzo, the Grammy-winning artist, addressed the lawsuits she faces during an appearance on the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast on Thursday, Dec. 19. The singer, 36, shared her side of the story and reflected on her experiences since the lawsuits were filed by three former dancers in August 2023.
Lizzo explained that the lawsuit, which included allegations of sexual harassment and a hostile work environment, came as a shock... Continue reading here ▶
“I was literally living my dream, and then the tour ended, and three ex-dancers just completely blindsided me with a lawsuit,” she said.
She expressed hurt and confusion, stating, “These were people I gave opportunities to, people I respected as dancers. Hearing allegations like sexual harassment deeply upset me. I don’t know what they’re trying to do, but it feels like the media is twisting things into something they’re not.”
The lawsuit accuses Lizzo of pressuring dancers to engage with nude performers at an Amsterdam club, weight-shaming them, and creating a racially hostile work environment. Lizzo has denied the claims, calling them “false and outrageous.”
Former Stylist’s Lawsuit and Clarifications
In addition to the dancers’ lawsuit, Lizzo faced a separate claim from her former stylist, Asha Daniels, alleging a toxic and discriminatory work environment. However, a judge dismissed Lizzo as a defendant in Daniels’ case on procedural grounds, determining that only her company, Big Grrrl Touring, could be held liable.
Lizzo clarified on the podcast, “A judge looked at the evidence and dismissed me from the case, but the case itself wasn’t dropped.” Daniels’ attorney later stated that Lizzo’s dismissal was due to jurisdictional limits, not lack of evidence.
Facing Negativity and Moving Forward
Reflecting on the past year, Lizzo shared how these experiences have shaped her as a leader. “I have no regrets. Let’s be clear: I did nothing wrong,” she said. She emphasized that she’s taking lessons from this situation as she continues her career.
Amid the legal battles, Lizzo has focused on her physical and mental well-being. In April, she hinted at stepping away from the music industry but later clarified that she’s leaving negativity behind, not her passion for music.
“What I won’t quit is the joy of making music and connecting with people,” she wrote on Instagram. “If I can inspire just one person to stand up to negativity, then I’ve done more than I could hope for.”
The harassment lawsuit from her former dancers is still active, with the next court hearing scheduled for Jan. 14. Lizzo remains committed to defending her reputation and continuing her journey in music.
