The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation and worked with FedEx to identify the driver responsible for delivering the missing packages. This led them to Latavion Lewis, a contract worker for FedEx.
According to the sheriff’s office, Lewis admitted to deputies that he had thrown away the packages at multiple locations instead of returning them to the FedEx warehouse. He said he did this because it was late.
Lewis was arrested and charged with an organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, and illegal dumping. As of December 23, he remains in the Holmes County Jail.
FedEx confirmed that Lewis is no longer associated with the company. In a statement, the company said, “This incident is completely unacceptable as the safe and secure transport of our customers’ shipments is our top priority. We are fully cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”
FedEx also assured customers that it is working to deliver the recovered packages to their rightful owners. The company encouraged anyone with questions about their shipments to visit their website or contact customer service.
The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office reported that 44 packages have been recovered so far. These packages were sent to the Bonifay post office, where they were delivered to their intended recipients. The total number of missing packages has not been disclosed.
